IMA Panel Presentations: Students, Careers, and Certification!

The IMA Potomac & Chesapeake Regional Council invites you to this non-CPE webinar. Please join us for an IMA panel presentation focusing on Career Paths and Certifications. Panelists include Kip Krumwiede, Stuart Brumfield, and Kathleen Sobieralski, supplemented by participation from our audience: students, faculty, and business professionals.

Kathleen Sobieralski, CPA (Indiana) University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC)

Kathleen Sobieralski earned a BS in accounting and business administration from Saint Mary's College (Notre Dame), an MBA from Indiana University (South Bend), and an MS in accountancy from the University of Notre Dame. Professor Sobieralski has more than 15 years of teaching experience and manages a curriculum of 21 undergraduate accounting and 14 graduate accounting courses for University of Maryland Global Campus. She teaches introductory and advanced accounting courses including ACCT 220/221 Principles of Accounting, ACCT 310/311 Intermediate Accounting and ACCT 424 Advanced Accounting. The focus of her work is to encourage and assist students as they work to meet their goals.

Professor Sobieralski is a longtime member of professional organizations, including the Institute of Internal Auditors, the Information Systems Audit and Control Association, the American Accounting Association (ISACA), the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners, and the Association of Government Accountants (AGA). She is a founding member of UMGC's Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) student chapter, a past board member of the local AGA, and a current executive board member for the Washington, D.C., area IMA.




Kip Krumwiede, CMA/CPA

Virginia Commonwealth University

Kip Krumwiede, PhD, CMA, CSCA, CPA, AIE, is a member of the accounting faculty of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). He is the former Director of Research for the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), where he developed and produced research studies on a variety of business topics. Prior to joining IMA, he served as a professor for many years at the University of Richmond, Boise State, and Brigham Young University (BYU). Before entering academics Kip worked for two Fortune 500 companies in a variety of finance positions.

Kip earned a BS and MAcc in accounting from BYU and a PhD in management accounting from The University of Tennessee-Knoxville. He has over 30 years’ experience doing research, consulting, teaching, and working in the area of management accounting and has authored over 50 articles, reports, and papers in a variety of professional and academic journals.




Stuart Brumfield, CPA/CMA

Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation

Stuart Brumfield earned his B.A. from University of Virginia and earned a Post Baccalaureate Certificate in accounting from VCU. Stuart is a CPA and a CMA. He has also earned the Virginia Contracting Associate designation from the Virginia Institute of Procurement. Currently he is employed with the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation as a Financial Planning and Budget Analyst. In this role, he performs the detail budget work for the agency budget, the budget approved by the legislature, and the cash flow budget that is monitored by the Commonwealth Transportation Board. Prior to his current position, he spent most of his career in the private sector, primarily at Thalhimer, a regional real estate company headquartered in Richmond, Virginia.

Stuart is a Past President of the Richmond, Virginia chapter of the IMA. He has served in multiple roles on the Richmond board since 2013.
